CONTEMPT OF COURT

SYDNEY NEWSPAPERS FINED. By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright. Received 18, 9.30 p.m. Sydney, November 18. The Full Court found the Daily Telegraph and the Evening News guilty of contempt of court for publishing what purported to he a confession by Senkovitch, at present confined in Darlington gaol on a. charge of murdering Eismond at Bourke.

The Chief Justice, in delivering judgment, expressed the opinion that the alleged confessions were calculated to prejudice Senkovitch in the eyes of the public from whom the jury to try him would be chosen. Justices Cohen and Street concurred. Each paper was fined £IOO and costs.

Similar proceedings initiated against the Sunday Times and the Melbourne Age were abandoned.
