CANADIAN MAIL SERVICE
AN AUCKLAND APPEAL. By Telegraph.—Press Association. . Auckland, Thursday. On behalf of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce the president (Mr. J. H. Gunson) to-day sent the following telegram to Sir Joseph Ward with reference to the Vancouver mail service:—"With regret I note that Australia is still opposed to the inclusion of Auckland as a port of call for the new Vancouver contract, thereby jeopardising the prospects of the same. We know and appreciate the fact that you have throughout advocated and endeavored 'to secure the consummation of such. We therefore trust you will at this juncture exert the utmost pressure successfully to conclude negotiations with Canada, especially in view of her recent announcement that New Zealand must be included. I would suggest that a matter of a further £SOOO or £IO,OOO yearly subsidy is unimportant, and would, in consideration of the fine up-to-date service affording mail and immense tourist benefits, be justified. Further, in view of the fact that the San Francisco service is fixed for only twelve months, or three months subsequent to the commencement of the new Vancouver service in July," it would be disastrous to lose the present opportunity if it is a matter of increased contribution. I trust you will not fail in. the effort <to secure this service, even apart from Australia as a party to the contract. It seems that Australia must in any case avail herself of it."
