CRICKET
C. GREGORY DEAD. | Sydney. November 14. i Charles \V. Gregory, the well-known cricketer, is dead. I [The deceased was but a young man, | having just entered his thirty-third I year. A brother of Syd. Gregory, he was considered by many to be of test i match calibre, and almost secured a ! place in the 1902 Australian team for ' England. On his first appearance for New South Wales against New Zealand, in 181)8-!), he made 40 not out, and created a good impression; but it was not until 1001-2 that he came into prominence—scores of 87 v. South Australia at Sydney, and 74 at Adelaide; 00 and 27 v. Victoria at Sydney; and 45 against MacLaren's team, setting the sea] on his fame as a first class batsman. In 1902-3 and the following season he was quiet out of form—97 v. South Australia at Adelaide and 44 v. Victoria at Sydney being the only two occasions on which he gave a glimpse of his true form. In 1904-5 he made 102 against. Queensland, 73 v. Victoria, and 54 v. South Australia being his next best efforts. Then, in November 1900, came his individual innings of 333 against Queensland at Brisbane—the second highest individual innings in first class cricket. Apart from this he did next to nothing during the remainder of the season. Of the same size and stamp as his brother Syd., with plenty of nerve and judgment, he had always been regarded as a batsman of great possibilities without having done full justice to the powers he undoubtedly possessed.]
