LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. In the Legislative Council this afternoon, replying to the Hon. J. T.Paul, the Attorney-General said the usual bonus to insurers in the Government Life Insurance Department would be distributed in April or May, 1912. The local Bills passed by the House were put through all stages. The Hawke's Bay Rivers Bill and the Taieri Land Drainage Bill were put through their final stages. The Licensing Amendment Bill was further discussed in committee. EVENING SESSION. At the evening session the Licensing Amendment, Harbors Amendment, New Zealand Loans Amendment, and Old Age Pensions Bills passed their final stages. The Council then rose.
HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES. The House met at 2.30 p.m. Replying to questions, Ministers stated That it is not proposed to introduce legislation this session providing for a universal half-holiday. That the suggestion of Mr. Reed that model by-laws be embodied in the Counties Bill will be carefully considered. The Public Works Amendment Bill was introduced by Governor's Message. j Replying to Mr. Jas. Allen, who asked what was the nature of the Bill, Sir i Joseph Ward said that on Friday he would inform the House what Bills the j Government intended to proceed with. J One of the Bills to be proceeded with was the Reserves Bill (washing-up Bill), which contained several important matters. The Public Works Amendment Bill was one of the most important to be dealt with during the remainder of the session. Several Bills would be circulate! on Thursday, but some of them would not be proceeded with. The Bill was read a first time. The remainder of the sitting was occupied in discussing answers to questions. The House rose at 5.30 p.m. EVENING SESSION. In the House in the evening, the following Bills were introduced by Governor's Message, and rend a second time pro forma: The Pokawa Native Reserves Amendment and Slaughtering and Inspection Amendment Bills.
The second reading of the Dentists Amendment Bill was moved by the Hon. D. Buddo. The Bill, he explained, gives opportunity to dentists' apprentices who, on the date oi the coming into operation of the Act. (January 10, 100.5) were indentured to dentists, but had failed to comply witk the provisions of the Act, and of passing the examination provided by the Act, being registered under the same.
On a division the sccotd reading was carried by 51 to 10.
The following Bills were read a second time:—Public Health Amendment (Hon. D. Buddo), Urewera District Native Reserve Amendment, and Inalienable Life Annuities (Hon. J. Carroll). The House went into committee on the Dentists Amendment Bill. An amendment, by Mr. Wilford. to clause 2, making it applicable to persons named in the schedule, was lost on the voices. Mr. Davey moved that apprentices o> pupils of dentists at the time of the passing of the Act, or within fifteen months thereafter, may submit themselves for examination .to a competent
