THE DEFENCE BILE. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Melbourne, November 16. In the House of Representatives the Defence Bill was read a second time. Mr. Cook, ex-Minister for Defence, asked for an adjournment. Mr. Hughes refused, and Mr. Cook declined to discuss the measure in committee. Ministers of religion are included in the list of exemptions. In the Senate the Customs Act Amending Bill was introduced. CUSTOMS AMENDMENT BILL. Received 16, 8.20 p.m. Melbourne, November 16. The amending Customs Bill extends the power of dealing with the prohibition of the importation and exportation of goods in the Commonwealth. The powers exercised by Customs officers in regard to smuggling are extended to deal with importation of all prohibited goods, and similar penalties are fixed. The House of Representatives negatived a proposal to provide the junior cadets with uniforms.
