CHOLERA RIOTS

TERRIBLE WORK BY THE MOB. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Received 16, 10.30 p.m. Milan, November 16. Cholera riots occurred at Ostuni, Apalia, owing to the Mayor, on hygienic, grounds, vetoing a pilgrimage to a neighboring shrine. The clergy preached a crusade in all churches against the Red Cross.

The belief that a cholera victim was being buried alive, caused a mob of 3000 to attack the funeral, which was guarded by soldiery. The .mob afterwards wrecked the cholera hospital, and the patients were carried through the streets on stretchers to their respective homes. Then the rioters set fire to the Town Hall. Seventy arrests have been made.
