The paper adds: "England's ability to aid us by the Scheldt in the event of invasion is ji supreme guarantee of independence. Without this, we are at the mercy of any neighbors desiring to violate our territory in order to reach an adversary. The Xetherlands has no right to render this guarantee illusory by closing the Scheldt."
