AN AMOROUS "DRUNK"
EMBRACES LADY IN THE STREET. Wellington, Yesterday, A tall, rough-looking laboring man named William Ryan was staggering along Featherston street about 4 o'clock on Wednesday afternoon considerably under the influence of liquor, and on entering Brandon street he was overcome by an affectionate impulse towards a young lady standing on the kerbing. He did not know the lady; in fact, he halt never seen her before, but nothing loth he shambled up, and threw his arms about her waist, and attempted to imprint a kiss upon her cheek. The lady resented the treatment in no uncertain manner; she became indignant and struggled to free herself from Ryan's embrace. Her husband arri'i. 1 on the scene, and took prompt! m - ->' a i:i'r<! to have him arrested. The constable on that beat took Ryan into :>-i= f pfly. and he was charged at the Magisl-'-iU;''; Court yesterday, before Mr. W. G. Kiileil, S.M., with being drunk, and assaulting the lady in question. He pleaded guilty to both charges, but had no explanation to offer. Sub-Inspector Norwood stated that accused had seven previous convictions against his name for various offences. On the charge of drunkenness, Ryaß was convicted and discharged, and on the charge of assault was fined £4, or fourteen days' imprisonment
