A PERTINENT QUERY
P. & 0. COMPANY ON ITS DEFENCE. By Cable—Press Sydney, November !). The agents of the Peninsular and Oriental Company have prepared statements in reference to the employment of colored crews. They point out that the Lascars are British subjects, firstclass seamen and boatmen, strjctly sober and amenable to discipline, engaged under the supervision of the Indian Government, and on full pay from the time they leave until they return to India. The space allotted to each man is the Wie as that allotted to Englishmen. The agents therefore desire to know in what manner does the employment of colored British subjects aboard ship compete with Australian or New Zealand seamen or waterside workers. If the colored seamen are dispensed with, howmany Australian and New Zealand-born men are available to man the P. and 0. mail steamers? They urge that parliamentarians should ask themselves whether, they should lend themselves to fomenting an objection against any section of the King's Indian subjects.
