PERSONAL.

A Sydney cablegram reports the death of Mr. Kenilworth Parkes, fourth son of the late Sir Henry Parkes. There is no change in the condition of Mr. F. E. Hardy, of Eltham, who is an inmate of the New Plymouth Hos2>ital. Mr. T. Amos, one of the oldest painters and paperhangers in New Zealand, died at his residence in Wellington on Monday. It is officially announced from London that Vice-Admiral George King Hall succeeds Sir R. Poore in the Australian station. Before leaving Blenheim for New Plymouth, Mr. J. W. Crombie, of* the Telegraph Department, was presented with a travelling bag and tobacco pouch from the officers of the Blenheim office.

Mr. Reg. George was last night entertained by his colleagues on the Recreathe Sports Ground Committe, who, on the occasion of his forthcoming marriage, presented him with a handsome armchair.

Mr. J. H. Hobbs, the new member for the West Ward, has resigned his seat on the Borough Council. It is understood that Mr. Hobbs has disposed of'his business interests locally, and will be leaving New Plymouth early next week.

Mr. E. M. Menzies, headmaster of the Matarawa school, is retiring after tliirty-two years' service * under the Wanganui Education Board. In 1878 he was appointed to the Awahuri school., and for twenty-one years he has been associated with the school at Matarawa.

Mr. P. O'Dea, M.A., formerly headmaster of the Sanson school, at present practising as a barrister and solicitor at Hawera, and a member of the Wanganui Education Board, intends, to oppose Mr. Pearce for the Patea district at the next general election. Mr. O'Dea had a successful scholastic career, and is an especially useful member of the Education Board. He is (says the Feilding Star) a good platform speaker, and should prove an especially strong candidate for the seat.

Mrs. Gow„ who, yesterday's cable stated, is taking steps to confirm cable advice that she is the legatee of the estate of Patrick Maguire, who recently died in America leaving property valued at seven million dollars (£1,400,000), is the wife of Mr. A. M. Gow, who is well known in New Zealand, and was for many years licensee of the Central Hotel in Wellington, and afterwards of Barrett's Hotel, Wellington. Prior to coming to Wellington Mr. and Mrs. Gow resided in Dunedin. Mrs. Cow was formerly Mrs. Laverty.

Among the list of successful candidates at the recent term of the examinations of the Otago University are three New Plymouth students. Mr. Donald Neil MeDiarmid secured a third-class in senior Latin, a secondclass C certificate course in senior English, a first-class mental science (junior) and a first-class in political economy. Mr. Gordon Napier MeDiarmid and Mr. John Stuart Dockrill obtained a third-class in senior anatomy.. The former was also placed in the firstclass in junior Physiology, and the latter in the second class in jnnior Physiology, whilst in practical physiology both students were in the secondclass.
