THE TARATA HALL.
To the Editor. Sir,—ln your issue of the 3rd inst., containing the report of the annuai meeting of the Tarata Hall and Public Library Company, I am accused of certain criticism which is contrary to fact. The point I took exception to is the inclusion of the items with the social in the balance-sheet. As the social was held for a special purpose, viz., gentlemen's dressing and card-room, the proceeds thereof should have been kept in a distinct account, although the actual cash could quite rightly have been banked to the general account to reduce the overdraft until required for the building. Moreover, there is no rule giving power to the committee to sell hall and library shares to raise money for further additions, and as the ques tlon of adding to the hall has never been submitted to the shareholders or guarantors of the company, the proceeds of the sale of such shares cannot rightly be devoted to such purposes. Further, the company is registered as a Hall and Library Company, and therefore the committee should first place a library in the hall before diverting the funds to further additions to the hall. If your correspondent had reported criticisms on other subjects discussed at the meeting, it would have furnished m«re interesting reading.—l am, etc., ALF CORKILL.
