STRATFORD DAY BY DAY

(From Our Own Correspondent.) Stratford, Last Night. Cricket starts here next Thursday, when a match will be played with Eltham. The following team will represent Stratford: Dunlop, Prebble, Cargill, A. Richmond, B. Simpson, G. Syme, Kemp, Melville, Fussell, Walker and Sparrow; emergency, Barry. It is oi'te7j a matter of reflection for many people why it is that cricket has not gained the hold on the popular mind in tho Dominion that it has done in other British dependencies. Very many reasons have been advanced, but whether they are the real cause or not. the fact cannot be gainsaid that cricket in New Zealand is the game of the few, aTid not of the many, and the veterans are. in every province prominent. This was recalled to my memory by noticing that "Ernie" Upham, who for so many years has done yeoman service for Wellington in representative matches, ha* donned the flannels again, though, to the writer's knowledge, he has intimated his intention of finally retiring from the playing area for the past two seasons. And he proved that "his arm has not lost its swing by securing the best, bowling average for his side. Other veterans who were playing first-cJasfl-cricket twenty years ago are still askeen as ever.
