A Sydney message states that .Mr. Garvin, Inspector-General of Police, has resigned. Miss Cottier, who hus been residing in Baltimore, U.S.A., for about a year, left there on October 0 on her return to New Zealand. A New York cable states that Sir Clifton Robinson, managing director of the United Electric Tramways, died in a New York street car.
Mr. Robert Clarke Shearm-in, who was connected with the New Zealand Police Force for many years, died at Taur;,nga last Monday, aged 88 years. Mr. Barry Yelverton, of Featherston. a livery stable keeper, has just been advised that, through the death of a cousin, he is now Viscount Avonmore. Mr. Tai Te Tau, of Masterlon, was recently promoted by the synofl of the Maori church to be Bishop -.f Wair»rapa. Thirteen other members of tftt, church have been confirmed is ministers of the church.
On Monday evening Mr. ''Reg." George, who is shortly to be married, was the recipient of a luindsome case of pipes at the hands of Mr. Fred Watson, on behalf of a few of the older members of Mr. Newton King's staff. Mr. George thanked his friends for their kind wishe.t and also the present, <vhich had quite taken him by surprise.
A Press message from Invereargill states that the Southland High School Board of Governors yesterday appointed Miss Nancy Jobson, M.A., senior assistant on the staff of the Presbyterian Ladies' College at East Olbourne, to be successor to Miss Cruickshank, lady principal of the Southland Girls' High School, who has resigned to take another appointment. Mr. Francis Whiteman, a very eld and much respected resident of the ITutt alley, died at Mungaroa on Wednesday under most pathetic circumstances. Deceased was returning home from Akatarawa. on Tuesday evening to attend his daughter's wedding. which was to have taken place on the following day, when he was; seized with a paralytic fit and fell from his horse. He was picked up in an unconscious condition, and subsequently died. Deceased, who was fifty-nine years of age, was a son of the late Mr. George Whiteman, one of the pioneer settlers of the Hutt Valley.
