The mail boat Brighton, from Newliaven for Dieppe, was seriously damaged in a collision with a five-master, the Preusscn-Hamburg, bound for Valparaiso, the world's largest sailer, off Beachy Head. The Preussen's crew of thirty were afterwards wrecked off Dover. A gale and heavy seas impeded the lifeboat. The -coastguard made heroic efforts to rescue them and threw rockets aboard. The attempts at rescue continue.
