Gilbey's survey of the vintage estimates that there will be only a tenth of the average crop in the RhineMoselle districts; no vintage at all in Champagne, Saumur, Burgundy and Chablis); no brandy at Cognac; a third of the usual vintage at Medoc; half crop in Italy; half to three-quarters in Spain; and Australian supplies will be decreased by the duty on spirits inducing growers to distil an increasing proportion of brandy for local consumption. France's loss bv the failure of the vintage will be £20,000,000 sterling.
