INGLEWOOD NEWS.

BOROUGH COUNCIL. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The ordinary monthly meeting of the Borough Council was held on Wednesday evening. His Worship the Mayor presided over ;'. full attendance of councillors.

Correspondence was received as folfollows: —

From the Bank of New Zealand, asking for form to be filled in re operating on the Council's District Fund account and Domain Board account. —The necessary resolution was passed. From Mr. C. S. Saunders, declining to undertake the work of the improvement of the cemetery.

From Valuation Department, stating that they were unable/to arrange a full revaluation of the borough, and suggesting that any urgent cases be reported to the Department.—The clerk was instructed to write and ask that the revaluation be carried out as soon as possible. From the Health Inspector, reporting on the sanitary arrangements of a house in which a case of diphtheria occurred. —The clerk was instructed to forward a copy of the report to the owner of the premises, and instruct him to comply with its terms. From the Education Board, acknowledging receipt of £25 for the Technical School .—Received. From A. Butler, requesting to be connected with the water supply. Water to be installed at annual fee ol £l, applicant to pay all costs of connecting, etc. From E. R. A. Haworth, stating that he would pay light bill on assurance thai he would be charged by meter from November I.—Mr. Haworth to be informed that if the amount be not paid within fourteen days, the Electric Light Company will be notified to disconnect his premises.

From Surveyor-General, enclosing a circular from the Department of Lands re the removal of survey pegs.—Clerk instructed to inform the Surveyor-Gen-eral that, to the Council's knowledge, no pegs or marks had been interfered with.

From W. H. Julian, tender for 100 yards of broken metal, 5s lOd per yard. —Tender accepted. . The Light Committee reported that, in answer to their request, five tenders hao. been received for street lamps. Burt and Co.'s tender of 115.6 d per dozen for 31-c.p. lamps has been accepted.—The action of the committee was endorsed.

The Works Committee (Cr. Young) reported that all the work which had been allotted to them 'to see done was completed, and the asphalt was almost ready to commence the footpath in front of the Inglewood Hotel. The footpath in front of the Bank of New South Wales was still subsiding, but was being kept filled. Metalling could, since the acceptance of the tender, now be proceeded with. The latter portion of the previous metal contract had been somewhat large, and the .acting foreman had been instructed to accept no more 01 such quality, and to nap any large stones.—Cr. Gibbs asked if it was in future to be the policy of the Works Committee to lend men for the spreading of footpath metal purchased by private individuals.—Cr. Tarplee said that the men had not been very busy at the time, and had been allowed to undertake the ( work so that the stuff might be got off the road as quickly as possible. The Council were not losers bv this, as the private persons referred to paid for the work at the rate of Is 3d per hour.— Crs. Surrey and Young also spoke to the question.—The report was adopted, as was also the overseer's report.. His Worship raised the question of the disposal of the amount realised by the sale of the old fence round the Square. He thought the feeling of the meeting held re the matter had been in favor of its being handed over to the original guarantors.—The necessary resolution was passed. Cr. Surrey raised the question of improvements to the building by-laws, which, lie said, were by no means up to date. He moved the following resolution: "That the clerk be instructed to write to the different councils from New Plymouth to Wanganui, and ask if they would join with this Council in calling for tenders (from architects or others) for a. revision of the building bv-laws for all classes of buildings.—Cr. Tarplee seconded, and the resolution was carried. Cr.'Tarplee referred to the cutting ol noxious weeds on the reserves, and also to the gazetting of the reserves.

The treasurer's statement was received. Accounts amounting to £126 16s 3d were passed for payment. Cr. Gibbs suggested that the gutters should be lime-washed with the Council's patent wash, and His Worship suggested that the tarring and sanding of the footpaths be proceeded with as soon as practicable. The meeting then terminated. LAWN TENNIS CLUB. The annual meeting of the Tennis Club was held on Tuesday evening. There was only a fair attendance. Mr. Messenger occupied the chair. The report showed that the last season had been most satisfactory. The membership list stood: Ladies 14, men 23, hon- [ orary 13. The usual yearly dance had J been held, and had proved most satisfactory, resulting in a small profit. Mention was made of Mr. M. J. Crombie'b departure. The profit and loss account showed receipts £4l 5s 6d, expenditure £33 lis Bd. The liability is now £32 13s sd. Eight new members were elected, while four resignations were received. The following alterations in the rules were made: "That in future the Club be managed by a committee of three, together with the president, vice-president and secretary, who are ex-officio members." "That quorums be, general meeting 10 members, committee meeting three members." The following officers were elected:— President, Mr. AV. Messenger; vice-presi-dent, Mr. H. A. Stratford; secretary, Mr. A. J. Law; committee, Messrs. C. C. Biemacki, A. Paterson and J. Sutherland; delegate to Association, Mr. A. Paterson; auditor, Mr. T. E. Hameri ton. The committee were asked to use every effort to get the grass court ready to play on as soon as possible. Thursday, November 3, was fixed for the opening day. The usual complimentary votes terminated the meeting.
