vJuL'AT PAGEANT. THE HISTORY OF THE COUNTRY. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Received. 30, 5.5 p.m. Capetown, October 29. Reuter states that the national pageant opened this afternoon in glorious weather. The pageant had bten eagerly anticipated for months. It took place on the shores of Table Bay, on a site specially prepared. The stands were crowded with several thousand spectators. There were over 5000 voluntary performers from all parts of the country, including a number of bushmen and Basutos. The pageant was divided into two sections. There were eight episodes to-day and there will be nine on Monday. To-day's dealt with the early Dutch and Portuguese days of South Africa, down to the Dutch capitulation to the British in I'Bo6. The function was most successful, the performers being attired in the costumes of the different periods and countries represented, and producing 'wonderful color effects. It was ;a triumph of organisation.
