Forty-nine entries may be regarded as a good start for the first year, though it is to be hoped that as time goes on and the scheme is better known the number will be doubled. In looking through the entries it is noticeable that §outh Taranaki is only responsible for three entries, and Hawera, one .of the largest of the towns of the butter province, has not a single representative. But the Hawera School has for many years had the reputation of keeping out of sports, and some years ago, when school football in the south was being organised Hawera held aloof. This gained for the school the title of "the Girls' School," a- nickname which was not at all appreciated by the lads at-, tending.
At a meeting of the committee appointed to arrange matters in connection with the athletic competiion held last night, the date was fixed for December 12. and judges, starter, timekeepers and other officials were appointed. The contest will be held at Stratford, and it is to be hoped that the movement will receive outside support. Invitations to be present are being sent to the members of Parliament for the district, the members of the two education boards and many old friends of the late Mr. Bayly.
