Defendant, a book-1 maker, pleaded not guilty. The case' broke down because a deaf witness declined to bear out a statement which it was alleged he had made to the detectives, that he had made a £5 bet with defendant on the Avondale races, i Samuel Isaacs, a bookmaker, was convicted at the Magistrate's Court today of street betting on the New Zealand Cup, and betting tote odds. Fines aggregating £SO were imposed. SELF-DENIAL WEEK.
