WAITARA WATERWORKS

TURNING ON THE SUPPLY. _ The official opening of the Waitara water supply took place on Thursday, afternoon in the presence of a large crowd. There was a capital supply of watci independent of that about to be turned on by the Mayoress, for it rained almost incessantly. In a few introductory remarks, Mr. W. F. Jenkins, the Mayor, gave a short history of the undertaking, referring to the, he believed, unique position occupied by the borough in the matter, as they had completed the work and had now to take a poll of ratepayers on the question of raising the loan to pay for it, but they were in the happy position of not being dependent on the vote for the necessary money, as the contractors were prepared to take the borough debentures, with 20 years' currency at 4y 2 per cent interest, for the whole cost of the work. He believed they had one of the best supplies in the' Dominion, as they had a pressure oi 1401b. to the square inch. Mrs. Jenkins then stepped to the hydrant, and the water, which had been conveved from the Waiongona river away'back in the hills near the railwnj line, poured forth. But, as at the first and' unofficial trial, there was something wrong somewhere, and the water did not rush, out with the 1401b. pressure behind it. This, however, it was explained, would he only a temporary shortcoming, as the water had on n previous occasion cleared the Masonic Hotel without an effort. Afterwards the guests, who included the Mayors . and several councillors from neighboring municipalities, were entertained in the Clifton Hall by the Mayor, and the borough of Waitara and its new undertaking were warmly and liberally toasted.
