j A FIVE-MASTED SCHOONER. j The five-masted schooner Inca arrived in Auckland recently and her visit is creating some interest, she being the first vessel of her type to trade in New Zealand waters. The primary idea of the fore-and-aft rig on such a big scale is to save working expenses. The Inca carries a crew of twelve, but would require nearly twice as many as if she were riggeu with yards in the ordinary way. Everything is worked from the deck, except the setting and furling of the comparatively light topsails which such craft carry. On four masts she carries the ordinary foresails of a schooner, and on the fifth she has what is known as a "Jeg-of-mutton sail"—very handy to work. The vessel brought a cargo of 1,360,000 ft of Oregon pine. A glance along the Inca's deck will convince anyone of the great capacity of this type of vessel, no less than 010,000 ft of timber being carried on deck.
The steamer Papanui was sold at Melbourne recently for £4425. The Papanui is 1-2 years old, and originally cost £IOO,000. OVERSEAS VESSELS TO ARRIVE IN WELLINGTON.
