FIRES

MAORI GIRLS' SCHOOL BURNED. [ By Telegraph.—Press Association. Napier, Last Night. The Hukarerc Maori Girls' School ifras totally destroyed by fire at 6 o'clock this morning. The building (one of forty rooms) was very old, and the flames spread with great rapidity, giving the girls barely time to escape in night attire. The fire broke out in the cloak room on the ground floor, but the cause is shrouded in mystery. The room was locked up last evening, and when the fire was discovered the window was seen to be open. The school was a very old landmark, having been established by. Dr. Williams, first Bishop of Waiapu, in 1875. The insurances are not yet available. The insurance on the Hukarore school was £IBOO on the building and £4OO on the furniture, both in the National Office. The girls lost everything.
