ATHLETICS.
BOYS' RELAY RACE. The High School relay race from Waitara to New Plymouth took place yesterday. This event was a competition between the five gymnastic teams, at the High School, each team consisting of ten boys, and each boy running a mile. The first live boys —Kelly, Skelton, Healey and Simpson —were started from Waitara at 3.15 p.m., each boy carrying his own team's color. Kelly went to the front at the beginning, and remained there, winning by about 75 yards. Healy came second, and then followed Simpson, Skelton and Claridge. The second lot were led by Whitton until half way, where he was caught by Warren, who ran a fine race, catching up 75 yards on the leading man and winning by 25 yards. Bendall beat Whitton 1 for°second place, and after Whitton came Teed and Kirkby. For the third mile Goss had a lead of 25 yards. The remainder stayed in the order—Mander, Brown, Newell and Chong. Mander ran a jgood race and gained on Goss, although he did sot manage to catch him. Newell came third, and Chong, who had run a splendid race from last place came fourth. Brown came in fifth.
Hamblyn kept his lead over the fourth mile, and won by 100 yards. Adlum, who had started last, overhauled Bacon, O'Brien and Throssel, and finished a fine race at second place. Bacon eame third, and O'Brien beat Throssell for fourth place. For the fifth mile Brokenshire led off, followed by West and Norman Little. Little overhauled the leaders, and won by about 25 yards. Brokenshire came second, and Lusk beat West for third place, Burkhardt, who started last, ran a good race, and cut down some of the ground that had been lost by his team. Colson had a good start of Gibson over the sixth mile, and maintained th« lead, winning by fifteen yards. Mason came third, and Grey beat Fordyce for fourth place. Over the seventh mile Bruce led all the way, but Leech ran a plucky race into second place. Alan Little came third, and Howell and Weston eame up later on. the latter boy running a fine race. Crone led off for the eighth mile, followed by Day, and won. Mulloy beat Wilkie, who ran . a .plucky race against bigger opponents. Salt finished fifth. Thomson was sent off'bv Crome, and settled down to a stride that' caused him to win by 100 yards. Clarke came a good second, and Norris third. Sinclair had a start on Bayly, but the latter managed to come in fourth. J For the final mile, from the Old Hospital road to the Red Post corner, Billing had a big lead', Martin and Pott coming in that order, and and Lusk being a long way behind. Billing began to tire slightly towards the finish, but won comfortably. Martin ran a fine race into second place, as did Pott, who came third. Grant ran the last mile splendidly, and so, <Jii Luskj who .had run a mile earlier in the race,,;
The finish wa§ watched by a large -number of "Spectators," and crowds followed the race all through its stalges. The winning team consisted-of: —A. Little (captain),, Billing, Bendall, Mander, Bacon, Col son,. Bruce, 'Crone and Thomson.
