SUEZ CANAL RATES

SHIPOWNERS WANT A REDUCTION. By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright. Received 18, midnight. London, October 18. The Morning Post states that shipowners are discontented with the Suez Canal rates reduction to seven and a quarter francs. They demanded five francs per ton, which M. de Lesseps, the promoter and builder of the canal, promised when the dividend was over 25 per cent. It is reported that the British Board of Trade favors the proposal, and that British influence will be used to secure a substantial decrease. The Treasury and ■Foreign Office, however, oppose the reduction.
