STRATFORD DAY BY DAY

(From Our O'vn Correspondent.) Stratford, Last Night. The Hon. T. Y. Duncan-, M.P., arrived by the mail train on Saturday night on a short visit to Stratford. He left by - this morning's train. Mrs, Kirkwod, accompanied by Miss and Miss G. Kirk wood, left this morning on a trip to Rotorua. It lias been decided to erect a memorial tablet in the Stratford Presbyterian Church in honor of the late Eev. Joshua Mcintosh and the late Mr. John Irvine. The opening of the local bowling green takes place on Thursday. So far fishermen do not report any big baskets, the majority of the anglers holding that there is too much water in the rivers. Scientific gardening does not appeal to everybody, and it is not safe to mention spraying to one of the local Chinaman. Nightly it was his wont to saunter forth and, with complacent pride, regard a splendid crop of young lettuces. But the slugs also had a good opinion of those lettuces, and John pondered how to get level with the slugs. Somehow he heard of a Chinese preparation which was supposed to be bad for slugs. He tried it and the enemy were seen no more—whether on account of the spraying 01* whether because the lettuce plants all withered up and died, is not known. Therefore John, when advised to spray, says, indignantly, "Wha' for?" A Chinaman named John Chong went to the Post Office this morning to buy some stamps. After completing his purchase he was leaving the Post Office, when a man asked him for "two bob." Chong declined to give it, whereupon the man struck him in the face, knocking him down. When Chong got up his assailant had disappeared] The matter was placed in the hands of the police, and this afternoon a man named George Brunnell was arrested. He will appear before the Court to-morrow.
