AXGLIC'AX MISSION. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Eltham, Yesterday. The Anglican Mission conducted b> the Rev. Hubert James during the last week has been attended by crowded congregations. This morning, prior to leaving for Canterbury, the missioner was presented by the parishioners with a New Zealand travelling rug and a letter expressing great appreciation of his work in the mission. MASSES FOR TIIE DEAD. Wellington, Yesterday. In the Palmerston North case regarding the will of Mary Sellers, Judge Cooper decided that a bequest for masses for the repose of the souls of the dead was legal. ' ALLEGED SERIOUS ASSAULT. Hastings, Yesterday. At the Magistrate's Court a laborer named Frederick Williams was commit-J ted for trial on charges (1) of breaking ami entering a dwelling-house at night] with intent to commit a crime, (2) as-, sanliing a female with intent to commit rape. Prisoner is alleged to have entered the victim's bedroom by the window at 2 o'clock on Sunday morning. A desperate struggle took place, in which, tlie intruder was severely handled. The house was aroused, and the man escaped, leaving a hat, by which he was identified by the police.
