MINERS' DISEASES.
A SPECIALIST'S REPORT. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Perth, October 17. Dr. Cumpston, who was appointed to investigate pulmonary disease amongst miners, 'has pronounced his report. The report, which covers (be past ten years, states that tuberculosis of the lungs has steadily increased, while pneumonia has decreased. Amongst 1085 miners examined, 33 per cent, of the machine workers were suffering from miners' phthisis, against 7 per cent, in the case of nonmachine miners, 3 per cent, of truckers, .and 24 per cent, of dry treatment workers. Tuberculosis of the lungs was present in 28 cases. Dr. Cumpston described tuberculosis as an infectious rather than as an industrial disease. Measures for its eradication should not stop at the exclusion of infected men from mines, but should include the segregation of tuberculosis persons who come into close association with miners. Miners' phthisis was solely due to the inhalation of mineral dust.
