THE C'AULFIELD MEETING. CUP WON BY FLAYINIUS. Received October 16, 5.55 p.m. Melbourne, Last Night. The Caulfield Spring Meeting was concluded to-day. It was quite a summer day, the bright sunshine drawing <l. large crowd. Visitors crowded in from all the States. Altogether it was one I of the most brilliant Cup days for tlu> Amateur Club. The Governor attended with the Government House party. Tiltrace for the big prize of the meeting never has been attended by more excite ment, just as it has never been regarded as a more open race. A dozen horses stood out with good chances, and all were fancied. Olivaster, on the strength of Wednesday's race against Mastei Soult, was most favored. When the barrier was raised punctually at 3 o'clock the largest crowd ever witnessed on the course saw the fastest Caulfield Cup race, beating Poseidon's previous record by a quarter of a second. Near home Olivaster was loudly proclaimed the winner, but Flavinius, finishing strongly, whipped past and was brought in amidst great excitement. Eric, Call Boy, Iliad and Idyll fell, the jockeys being unhurt. Results: —
Obv Stakes.—Concave, 10.9, 1; Merely, 10.9, 2; Daka, 9.5, 3. Seven others started. The placed horses were always in the van, Concave winning by three lengths, half a length separating the second and third. Time, 4min 9sec. I Gwyn Handicap. —Sweet Malt, 8.7, 1; Wooleraine,- 9.3, 2; Philio, 8.0, 3. Ten others started. Sweet Malt led all the way after the horses got going, and won by 1 lengths, two lengths separating second and third. Time, CAULFIELD CUP HANDICAP, of 3000 sovs (first 2500, second 350, third 150); P/a miles. Flavinius (Flaviu's—Gold Grip), 8.3 (Hickey) 1 Apple Pie (Ayr Laddie—Pralun), C.ll (Sampson) '2! Britain (Grafton —Bright Alice), (Wood) 3 Olivaster (Palmer Olive), 7.9 (Smith) 4 Bobaden 7.1 and Silver Hampton 8.1, were scratched. Sequarious led from White, Maltine, Danaus and Mindful, Eric being last. At the mile post, Sequarious led by three lengths from Danaus, White Eyeglass, Kerlie, Mindful, Flavinius. Conge and Topedi. At the last round Olivaster moved upinto fifth place, followed by Apple Pie, Malthe, Conge, Aborigine, Mindful Sequarius and Eyeglass. Danaus led along the railway side. Approaching the turn, Eyeglass took command from Olivaster, Apple Pie, Sequarious, Flavinius and Danaus. Eyeglass led round the tun from Olivaster, Apple Pie and Flavinius coming fast. Oliver led at the distance from Flavinius, Apple Pie and Britain. Flavinius, running very strong, passed Olivaster, and was chased by Apple Pie, the former winning well by two lengths, two and a half lengths separating the other placed horses. Time, 2mm 3iy 3 sec. Olivaster was fourth. Then came Eyeglass, Multilator, Son of a Gun, Dhobi, Lager, ! Maltine and Mindful, j Steeplechase.—Chivalry, 9.0, 1; Kia Ora, 10,11, 2; Squirm, 9.11, 2. Eight others started. Won by three lengths, five lengths between second and third. Time, 4min 4G%sec. Windsor Handicap.—Eartfell, 1; Sylvander, 2; Running, 3. Hartfell, overhauled the field in the straight and won , by three-quarters of a length, two lengths between the other two. Time, linin 17sec. Moora Stakes. —Late Hours, 8.5, 1; Optimism, 5.7, 2; Quoit, 8.5, 3. Twelve started. Won by a short neck, a length and threequarters separating second and third. Time, lmin 43sec.
