Sir George Reid, speaking at the Engineering Exhibition at Manchester, said he was glad Imperialism was becoming something more than a delightfully sounding phrase. Australia had started in the race for prosperity and greatness, but the stronger and richer the ambitions of her people became, the more their loyalty to the Home Land extended. It was the greatest mistake to say England was decadent, but she would be better with a little ibit of compulsory military service in schools.
