A WIN FOR LABOR
THE NEW SOUTH WALES ELECTIONS. NARROW WORKING MAJORITY. LICENSING RETURNS STILL INCOMPLETE. By Gable—Press Association—Copyright. Sydney, October 15. On present figures, though in a few cases later returns may possibly alter the results, the Herald gives the state of the parties in the new House as follows: Labor 47 Liberals 43 The Telegraph puts the figures at: Labor 46, Liberals 44. Laibor one seat. The Liberals regained the Upper "Hunttef seat, while, to their previous captures Labor added .Macquarrie, Namoi and Makgee, and defeated Mr. Moore, Minister of Lands, at Bingara. Appeals are certain. Mr. Moore was defeated by the narrow margin of 136. Second ballots are required in North Sydney, and probably in two other elee-
iterates, in all of which an Independent Liberal split the vote. , The Rev. Mt. Crawford, Labor member, who replaces a Liberal at Marrickville, is an ex-Congregational minister. The rtport that no-license was carried at Petersham was premature. Later figures.show that it carried reduction only, but nearly all the no-license votes are so incomplete that it is impossible to say anything really definite. Allowrie's latest returns make it appear that no-license was carried, but a complete count may alter this. The city electorates remain true to continuance, and in th? suburbs known as working men's suburbs, there appears on the present showing to be a preponderance in the same direction. Reduction is holding its own in the residential suburbs, bufcron the whole nolicense does not appear to have'advanced to the extent its supporters anticipated. The party is hopeful that later returns may place them in a better position. One feature appears to be a. ' : striig!ftA*'cWlivaj*e' between coiitfritiftfic*' and no-license and less votes for reduc- , tion. At a late hour last night Mr. McGowan and other labor leaders addressed a great gathering outside the Worker newspaper office. The speeches were enthusiastic at 1 Labor's success. T?he Sydney HeraJd says that !•' it- tfie 1 I&9* ; ]ost*' . its n»jority, "but not so t;Jrar' k tKat''3®r. can form, a. .Ministry, without serfous' difficulties. *' If a Laiboir GOTemment is formed it will have to depend more or less on Liberal support, This : means that the people will have to eni dure a season of manoeuvring on the three-party system with the Liberals practically ■qallin|» ? the ; ( The Telegraph declares that the election merely emphasises that vague feeli ing which is now manifesting itself in this and other communities, and goading them tq wild paths of experimentalism, the end of which neither they nor anyone else can discern. CONGRATULATIONS FROM NEW ZEALAND. Wellington, Last Night. Mr.-D. McLaren, Labor M.P., has cabled to Mr. McGowan. Leader of the New South Wales Labor Piycty, conveying congratulations on the result of the gen- j eral election in that State. LABOR STILL LEADS. NO LICENSE HAS A SET-BACK. ■ Reecived 17, 0.30 a.m. ! Sydney, October U>. Many small returns from the country • electorates are still coming in, but aio 1 unlikely to alter the results. As the figures now stand the new ' House is composed of 46 Labor members and 44 Liberals. Second ballots are required in four electorates and they may slightly alter the parties. Local option returns will not be complete for some days. Later figures, however, instead of improving the no-license positions, as the party hoped, point ' strongly in the opposite direction, and ' to many electorates which last election voted reduction are reverting to continu- ' ance. On the present incomplete figures ' only 13 favor reduction. Last election 64 voted reduction.
