LAWN TENNIS

THE NEW PLYMOUTH CLUB. The annual meeting of the New Plymouth Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club was held in the Town Hall last night. The attendance, whilst good, was not as large as usual. The president, Dr. H. B. Leatham, presided. The annual report and balance-sheet, as previously published, were adopted. The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted in the re-election ox the following: President, Dr. H. B. Leatham; vice-president, Dr. Home; secretary, Mr. H. Stocker; committee, Messrs. J. Morton, J. C. Nicholson, C. H. Weston, 11. Stow and J. Paton; auditor Mr. H. B. Armitage. There was no response to the president's invitation to voice any complaim, or suggestion. Dr. Leatham interpreteo. | this as an indication of entire satisfaction to the club's management in the past year. He congratulated members, on the success of the club, and its bright prospects for the coming season. He remarked that the existence of such a club, with such excellent courts, was a great asset to the town. The holding of the Taranaki Association's tournament here each year attracted manyvisitors to the town. He moved, and it was carried, that application be made to the Taranaki Lawn Tennis Association's tournament be held on the courts this year. Miss Brewster moved and Mr. Nicholson seconded, an amendment in the direction of altering the age limit from 1C to 18 years. Mr. Nicholson pointed out that the membership list was always full, and particularly in the case of lady members. There was not much in the argument that admission at the younger age woulq encourage tennis, because most people took up the game before reaching the age of sixteen years. Mr. Paton said there was the financial .aspect to consider. He had no doubt that the number of lady members could be trebled if the list were thrown open. But in any club where the ladies' "sub." was only half the men's, the mpii'bership must be kept in the ratio of three ladies to two men in order to assure the finances. The motion was carried without dissent, and the rules will be amended accordingly. Mr. Paton, as secretary of the Tnwn Tennis Association, asked if the club's courts would be obtainable for the annual Auckland-Taranaki match on the third Saturday in February.—No obieetion was raised, the feeling being that local plavers benefited by these interprovincial contests. Votes of thanks were accorded the outgoing officers, the ladies and the press, and the meeting closed with the customary compliment to the chairman.
