(Conducted by "Eileen"). SOCIAL NEWS. FIRE BRIGADE BALL. The Fire Brigade Ball, which is an annual affair, eventuated last Wednesday in the Theatre Royal, and is looked upon hy the children or Xav Plymouth as the event of the year. Nothing else is talked about for weeks beforehand and mysterious whispers iloat around the playgrounds of the schools about the different fancy dresses they are going to wear (one must not tell even one's dearest friend; oh, children, how very quaint but extremely interesting you are!). The I hall was beautifully decorated with buntI ing, Chinese umbrellas and lanterns, making one feel a-, if one were in an Eastern bazaar . The credit, and with it a deal of praise, is due to Mr. Brookes. Berry gave a most enjoyable afternoon tea in honor of her daughter, Mrs. Leonard Williams (Taihape), who is paying a visit to New Plymouth. The children's fancy 'dress carnival came off in the Dominion rink on Monday evening. The buikling was prettily decorated with flags. The Hawera Borough Band played throughout the evening. A goodly number of young folk, exquisitely dressed, were present, and they thoroughly enjoyed themselves, as also did the parents and friends who thronged the building to watch the fun. The prizes were as follows:—Bestdressed girl, Little Miss Linley Douglas 1, Miss Raine 2; Most original dress, Miss Elodie Marmont 1, Miss Olive Jury 2; best boy's dress, Master Buckley 1, Master Chadwick 2; original boy's dress, Master Claude Parsons 1, Master Coleman 2. Special prizes were given by 'Messrs Muir, Pearce, Parsons, Goodson, Bastie, and W. P. Ross. Best skater under six, Master C. Parsons; best girl skater under 12, Miss Grant; best boys, Masters Bailey and Graham; best .girl skater over 12, Miss Tottie Chadwick. Two little girls, Misses .Scott, received a special prize for their quaint dresses. The potato race was won by Master Percy Bailey.
