NEW SOUTH WALES ELECTIONS

EXTREME ACTIVITY SHOWN. LIBERALS HOLDING THEIR OWN. LABORITES DEFEAT TWO MINISTERS, By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Received 14, 10.25 p.m. Sydney, October 14. The weather was fine and the polling generally heavy. All parties showed extreme activity. Hundreds of vehicles of all sorts were pressed into service. There was a rush when the booths were opened. The voting was steady throughout the day. Another rush was made towards the close of the booths, which were crowded. Numbers who put off voting until the last minute were shut out. The women showed an increased interest and recorded their votes much more freely than at the previous election.

Returns are coming in very slowly. Early figures show that the Liberals are fairly holding their own. The Premier (Mr. Wade) and the Leader of the Opposition (Mr. McGowan) are back with large majorities. When the last Parliament dissolved the state of the parties was: Liberals 53, Labor 37. Mr. Sydney Keegan ,a Laborite, defeated Mr. Hogue, Minister for Education, at Glebe. . 'Mr. Osborne, a Laborite, defeated Mr. Oajces, honorary Minister, for Paddington. Labor also won the King division of the city from the Liberals. Mr. McGowan defeated his Liberal opponent by nearly three to one.

LABOR IN THE LEAD. LICENSING RETURNS INCOMPLETE. Received October 15, 12.30 a.m. Sydney, Last Night. The Liberals lost three more seats Marrickville, Surrey Hills and Newcastle —to LaJbor. Mr. Moore, Minister of Lands, looks like suffering defeat at Bingara. Other Ministers are apparently fairly safe, but the bulk of the country returns are very incomplete. Enormous crowds surround the newspaper offices, watching the posting of returns, there being great cheering and counter cheering as the numbers go up. Several seats are in the balance, while the bulk of the others are so incomplete as to make it impossible to forecast the result. Local option returns are extremely backward, and it will probably be days before the complete returns are obtained, 'which are so small at present that they do not form any index to the true position. In six electorates they favor reduction; in 14 others (chiefly about the city) they favor continuance. The latter result was expected. Received October 16, 1.10 a.m. Sydney, Last Night.

Indications point to Labor securing several further victories in the country. Mr. Morrish, who captured Sir Geo. Reid's old seat, is what is known as a "Continental Socialist." Sir. James Grahame's defeat at Surrey Hills robs the Liberals of a prominent supporter. Mr. Bruntnell, elected for Annadale, is the secretary of the New South Wales Alliance. Received October 15. 1.13 a.m. Sydney, Last Night. The latest return shows the position as follows: — Labor 45 Liberal . 38 It is reported that Petersham carried No-license. BEFORE THE POLLING. Sydney, October 14. The morning papers contend that if all who owe allegiance to Liberalism do their duty there is no fear as ; <to the result The Laibor Party is very confident of victory. The No-License Party is hopeful of carrying four or five electorates.
