32,000 TON BATTLESHIP.
NEARLY TWICE AS LARGE AS THE DREADNOUGHT. Admiral Bncellar, the head of the Brazilian Naval Commission, which is taking over the new Brazilian cruiser Rio Grande do Sul from Messrs Armstrong, Whit worth and Co., stated that the thiru battleship which will be built for Brazil under the 1906 programme will be of greatly-increased dimension and power as compared with the two other Brazilian Dreadnoughts iust completed. The new battleship will displace 32,000 tons, and carry twelve 14-inch guns. Such a colossal vessel could not be left alone, the admiral said, but similar ships would have to be built to accompany her in the Brazilian fleet. Previous report has attributed this monster 32,000-ton ship to the Chilian programme. She will be built at Messrs Armstrong's, and will be much the largest and most heavily-gunned warship in the world. The following tabie compares the most powerful battleships in the world:—Brazilian, new ship, 32,000 tons XII. 14-inch; Argentine Moreno, 28,000 tons, XII. 12-inch; Austrian Tegetthoff, 21',000 tons, XII. 12-incli; German, Oldenburg, 23,000 tons, XII. 12inch; British, Orion, 22,000 tons X. 12inch. The original British Dreadnought displaces 17,900 tons, and carries ten 12meh guns.
