STRATFORD DAY BY DAY
(From Our Own Correspondent.) Stratford, Last Night. Two deputations and three reports kept the Borough Councillors at the Council till well after 11 o'clock last night. One deputation took up over an hour and a half, and the Council might with advantage consider the afdvisabilit.y of imposing a time limit. The Hospital Board sent a deputation to wait on the Council last night with the object of enlisting the civic fathers' support of a proposal by the Board to acquire certain municipal reserves situated in the centre of the hospital reserve. It was suggested that the Council and Board each appoint a valuer to determine the value, and, when this is settled, that an Empowering Bill be brought before Parliament. Mr. Buckman recently brought a block of land in Stratford, and cut it up for building sites, which were readily disposed of. In order to take full advantage of his land the formation of a new street was necessary, and it appears Mr. Buckman underestimated the cost. He waited on the Council last night with a request that the conditions imposed by the Council be modified. After listening to him the decision of the Council -was deferred.
A rather peculiar point has arisen as regards the duty of fife brigade officials at the Town Hall during entertainments. The Brigade wrote to the Council complaining that at the Masonic Ball a [Councillor resented being asked to stop smoking in the doorway on the north side of the Town Hall leading, to the stage. The Brigade wanted to know their position. The councillor referred to said the Brigade were over officious. Another councillor did not agree with this and upheld the Brigade, and finally the matter was referred to the Town Hall Committee. A point not touched on was whether the Brigade have a right to enter the Hall at a private function.
George White, who comes from Irigleirood, met with an accident at tht Whangamomona tunnel yesterday. He was working in the tunnel when he slipped as a truck was approaching. It was impossible to stop the truck, which ran over his leg, crushing it severely. He was brought into the Hospital, whert his leg was amputated above the knee. Stanford and Mrs. Menzies (8), 7 down; F. P. Uniacke ami Mrs. Copping (22), 7 down; 0. Vaughan 'and Mrs. Robinson (18), 8 down F. N. Russell and Mrs. Paget (22), 8 down; H. L.
