WAITARA NEWS.
BOROUGH COUNCIL. (From Our Own Correspondent.) A special meeting of the Council was held on Wednesday evening, prior to the ordinary meeting, when the Mayor moved, by way of special order, thai the Waitara Borough Council resolves to wholly close that portion of Stafford street, between West Quay and Queen street, containing, by admeasurement, 1 rood 5.7 poles. The motion was seconded by Mr. A. Brabant and carried. At the ordinary monthly meeting oi the Council, held on Wednesday evening, there were, present: His Worship the Mayor, Crs.' Brabant, Black, Klenner, Spurdle, Rattenbury and Bkdling. The Works Committee reported that the matter of maintenance of boundary road would come before the next meeting. Mr. S. Wyllie waited on the Council for the purpose of ascertaining whether the residence he was now erecting could be connected with the sewerage system. —Applicant was advised that he would ! receive consideration. ' The Mayor moved, in accordance with notice of motion, that a general rate lof six farthings be levied.—Or. Birdling' seconded. Cr. Brabant moved, and Cr. Spurdle seconded, as an amendment, that a general rate of one penny, and a library rate of one-eighth of a> penny be struck. The Mayor pointed out that such a rate would be quite inadequate for thb Borough's wants. The amendment was lost, and the motion carried. It was resolved to declare furze a'nd ragwort as noxious weeds within th* I borough, the motion to be confirmed as a special order at the next meeting. Correspondence was received from the Postmaster, stating that, in reply to the borough's request for the erection of posting pillars, one had been authorised in McLean street, and the other would receive favorable consideration. From the Bank of New Zealand, enclosing the necessary forms re overdraft. From the Inspector-General of Hospitals, forwarding circular re Hospital Board assuming the duties of health officers. From S. F. Prosser, asking for the levels of Ogle street. From the Lands and Survey Department re neglected sta/te of the Soldiers' Cemetery. From the stationmaster, complaining •f wa*t of attention by tlwnightsoil contractor, and asking, how,the Department may recover amounts paid when the work was not done. From C. M. Townsend, resigning his motion as borough solicitor, and suggesting that Mr. Wilkes might receive consideration in the matter of appointment to the position. Applications to be connected with the water supply were received from Messrs. Thos. Buchanan, J. Montefiore, Clifton Rowing Club, A. Kerr, G. H. Stubbs and Waitara Rowing Club. The foreman's report was read. Messrs. S. George and F. Richards applied for permits to connect water services. The Mayor gave notice of intention to borrow ■■ under the State Guaranteed Advances Act, 1909, the sum of £20,000 for water, drainage and street construction. The necessary documents re bank overdraft were authorised to be signed. Cr. Rattenbury was appointed the Council's delegate to attend a meeting, when called, in reference to the Inspec-tor-General of Hospital's circular. The clerk was instructed to reply to the Commissioner of Crown Lands that the matter of improving the Soldiers' Cemetery had been taken over by the. Volunteers, who did some work and hao the best of intention to do more. In the meantime the Council has attendedto the matter. ' The night soil contractor is to be advised cf the stationmaster's complaint, and asked for an explanation. Also to be informed his work must receive better attention. The resignation of the borough solicitor was accepted. The several applications received for water supply were granted. Crs. Bribant, Spurdle, Blac kand Klenner were appointed a waterworks com-, mittee for the purposej.jjf attending to the matter of the issue of permits after the overseer has agreed to the, fitness of applicants. A large amount of correspondence re waterworks matters from the Spiral Steel Pipe Company, Orbell and Mackay and Mr. Climie was read. The Mavor and Cr. Brabant were appointed the Council's representatives if a conference is needed between the contractors and engineers. It was resolved to put up a notice warning trespassers off the waterworks headworks. Accounts amounting to £93 15s Id general, and £338 17s 5d water, were passed for payment.
