STRATFORD DAY BY DAY
(From Our Own Correspondent.) Stratford, Last Night. During the work of the boring of the Whangamomona tunnel the men struck a flow of natural gas, which ignited freely. A sample has been sent to Mr. P. J. Heatley, M.A., M.Sc., for analysis. Colds are very prevalent at present, and there is a good deal of infant sickness about, for which the changeabltt weather is doubtless largely responsible. The members of the various lawn tennis clubs are getting their respective courts in" order in preparation for the coming season. An effort is being made to revive the Stratford Cricket Club, and 1 understand that a meeting is to be convened at an early date. There is some doubt whether there will be a club at Toko this season. Two informations for sly-grog selling will occupy the attention of the Magistrate to-morrow. The opening up by the Ongaxue-Strat-ford railway line of the hinterland of Stratford is having the effect of attracting large numbers of settlers from other parts of the Dominion. It is also causing an alteration in the opinions of many of the jquality of the country. A South Tarannki farmer, who has just concluded his 'first trip through the district referred to, in conversation., with the writer yesterday, remarked that he had no idea there was so much good country behind Stratford. In common with many others he had shared the impression that the land was nothing but "razor backs."
