John Barrett, George Barrett, Frank Gray, Daniel Rogers and John Kennedy were charged at Levin to-day, before Mr. Thomson, 8.U., with having played "two-up" on the occasion of the Levin races. The evidence of Detective Cassels, Constable dimming and two civilians was that all five accused played, but both Barretts swore that neither Barrett played. The 'Magistrate disbelieved Barrett and fined each accused £SO and THEFT OF PIGEONS. • Wellington, Thursday. A charge of having stolen twenty-five hominw pigeons, valued at £3l, the property" of Ernest Albert Coles, was brought against a laboring man, John Cicel, at the Magistrate's Court to-day. Detectives Cameron and Rawle stated that they searched accused's house in Little Hawkstone street, and in a sack in one of the upstairs rooms they found twenty-two dead pigeons, in a bucket eighteen pigeons' heads, thirty-eight legs, and a quantity of feathers. The rings were also found. A statement made by accused contained an admission of the theft, also that he had been drinking. He stole the birds in consequence of "a quarrel with the family."
