INGLEWOOD NOTES.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) Mr. J. W. Winfield has disposed of his cabinet-making business to Mr. L. de Launay. Messrs Adam, Lile and Son have started a bakery business in the premises lately occupied by Mr. R. J. Frewin. Mlrs. Cresswell, who has for some time past been in charge of the Inglewood Coffee Palace, deft by Wednesday morning's train for Wellington, where she intends tafcing over a boardinghouse at Island Bay. The fortnightly Druids' social was held in the Druids' Hall on Tuesday evening and was quite as successful as its predecessors, mainly owing to the excellence of all the arrangements. In accordance with local custom, the ex-Mayor, Mr. H. B. Curtis, waited on the Borough CouncM at its last meeting and presented them with an enlarged framed photograph of himself. He made a neat speech appropriate to the occasion. The local golf championship has now been reduced to the final, the contestants being Messrs J. E. Gordon, Glassford and A. J. Law. The match is creating some interest, and Mr. Law's ability or other wise to hold the coveted title is the subject of much conjecture. Messrs Orhell and Mackay, the engineers who had charge of the Waitara water scheme, are, to be complimented on the success which has attended their plans. No flaw has been found so far in the whole system. The Maketawa Dairy Co. has decided to ship its produce on open consignment. An epidemic of whooping cough has been going round the district and has interfered considerably with the school attendance. It is to be hoped it will soon leave its present quarters. A Catholic social was held on Wednesday night and proved a great success. The floor, music and supper were excellent, and all helped to provide a most enjoyaible evening. A meeting of those interested will be held on Tuesday next to consider the best means of beautifying the square. It is to be hoped it will receive the support such a worthy object deserves. The fortnightly meeting of the Debating Society was held in the Druids' Hall on Wednesday evening. There was a fair attendance. Mr. Allen occupied the chair. The question debated was License v. No-License. Messrs Boldt, Biemndr and "Currie spoke for the former and Messrs' Stratford and Hamerton for Hit: latter. A keen tussle resulted in a dead heat, the chairman giving his casting vote in favor of the License side of the question. A social is* to be held shortly to conclude the season. It is to be hoped it will be as well supported as the debates have been. BOROUGH COUNCIL. The ordinary monthly meeting of the Inglewood Borough Council was held on Wednesday evening. There were present: His Worship the Mayor and Crs. Bennett, Fawcett, Young, Surrey and Tarplee.

Correspondence was read and dealt with as follows:—From members Parliament, in reply to a circular issued by the Council; from the postmaster, stating that linemen had inspected telephone post, which was not considered dangerous, and should it become so it would be replaced (the post has since been renewed) ; from the Acclimatisation Society, thanking the Council for permission to connect the fish-nearing station at the Bacon Factory with the watersupply and to use water free of charge; from "the Electric Light Co., requesting the Council to notifv consumers three months in arrears that their premises would be disconnected if accounts were not paid before 10th inst. (request acceded to). A petition was received from Messrs Barker, Paterson and Robert (fancy soot's dealers and ironmongers), asking for exemption from early closing—it was resolved that the clerk be instructed to inform petitioners that the Council cannot certifv that petitioners constitute a majority of the trades mentioned. The Inspector-General of Hospitals wrote asking if the Council their responsibility under the Health Act in favor of the Taranaki HospitalBoard.—lt was decided that Cr. Tarplee be the Council's delegate to the conferThe Minister for Internal Affairs wrote stating that Constable L. D. Mclvor had been appointed Inspector of Weights and Measures for the Inglewood borough.The clerk was instructed -to write and ask Constable Mclvor to visit the borough. j Applications were received from Jttrs. Such revaluation, it was estimated, would increase the revenue considerably. —The report was adopted. Or. Younsr, for the Committee, reported that tihe drain in front of . It was decided that the Electric Light Co. be asked to appoint delegates to ■wait on the Council on the 10th inst. at 7.45 p.m. to explain the company's action in issuing a circular refusing consumers the option of paving by meter for current consume!. Cr. Fawoet! drew attention to a serious overflow of water from the drains in Franklin's building. —The clerk was instructed to write drawing the owner's attention to the leakage.
