Engineer-Lieutenant Sydenham, R.N., representative of the Admiralty at Westport, is expected in New Plymouth in a lew days. Messrs. E. H. Carter and N. Perry, two New Plymouth boys, left yesterday morning for Wellington, whence they embark on a tour of the eastern Australian cities. Mr. and Mrs. Alfred McKellar and Messrs. -Party, C. 0. Hawke, J. G. Elwin, M. Mills and R. Campbell were amongst the passengers, per s.s. Rarawa, last night for Auckland. A London cable reports the death of Miss Ruth Hopwood, the elder child of Sir Francis Hopwood, Permanent UnderSecretary for (the Colonies, on the eve of her father's departure for South Africa with the.Duke of Connaugnt. Mr. George Connett, who has been a resident of Taranaki for about thirtyfive years, and who has been locomotive engineer at the harbor works fox about thirty years past, died yesterday afternoon. He went to work as usual, but at about 11 o'clock he had a seizure, and had to be taken home in a cab. He never regained consciousness, and died at a quarter to four o'clock. The deceased, who was a brother of Mr. J. B. Connett, leaves a widow and a large family. In reference to the death of Mr._ F. O'Reiley, a Turakina and Rangitikei pioneer, a northern exchange states that deceased was one of th« very few remaining survivors of the 65th Regime-it, once immortalised in the London Punch as "the lost regiment," because it was «> long in New Zealand that the. War Office had forgotten its existence, so Mr. Punch said. A number of the old regiment bought their discharges and settled in New Zealand, where many of them prospered in' the course of time, but very few are now left.
