The Kittawa arrived off ,tlhe port about 1)1.30 p.m. on Tuesday night, and berthed early yesterday morning. She landed 290 packages of explosives for the Harbor Board and loaded 5000 ft of timber, besides a small quantity of general cargo, and sailed for Greymouth ait 8.30 a.m. THE ROSAMOND. The Rosamond left Wellington yesterday afternoon for Nelson and New Plymouth, and will arrive here to-morrow. She will bring about 300 tons of cargo for this port. LIGHTING THE BREAKWATER.
At a recent meeting of the Harbor Board the harbormaster suggested the advisability of erecting a light at the end of the breakwater as a guide to mariners using the port. The foreman reported on the cost of same and the Board seemed favorable to the idea and referred the matter to the engineer. So far the matter has not materialised. The need of a light in the position named was evidenced on Tuesday night, when the Kittawa, which was to have berthed •that night and discharged and loaded a cargo, was unable to pick up the breakwater. She arrived about 1'1.30 p.m. some distance off, but owing to the extreme darkness and the captain's not being very familiar with the port, it was decided .to lie outside. Probably had a ligflt or some other signal by which the captain could have located the breakwater been in evidence the boat could •have got in at once and avoided the delay tihat occurred, and, possibly, assist to retain the reputation of the port.
