Many handsome banners and devices marked the procession. It is estimated that a quarter of a million people lined the route. A NUMBER O.F CAPSIZES. A number of capsizes occurred at the Babnain regatta, owing to the choppy wind'. There .were, however, no fatalities. Pridd'le won the Amateur Sculls. A PECULIAR ACCIDENT. A peculiar accident happened in the kanbor. A boat with eight persons aboard was crossing some punt ropes when they became tightened and lifted the Iboat bodily in the air. All the occupants "were thrown into the water. A girl named Chase was drowned. Another girl's hand was badly crushed, FEDERAL PREMIER'S POLICY. LABOR WANTS A PRESS. Received October 4. 12.15 a.m. Sydney, October 3. The speeches of the Labor leaders at t/he Eight Hours Day dinner were confident. Lord Chelmsford was warmly welcomed, and uttered a warning at the tendency of education to-day towards excessive utilitarianism. ■Mr. Fisher, Premier, in defending the Federal Government, reasserted his intention to carry, out its programme. Not the least of Labor's difficulties, he said, was that it had no press to back its statements. He asked the men and women who made the country to help in getting; a press which would present the truth to the public, so that both sides would be heard. CYCLING SPORTS. Received October 4, 'lc2.IV! a.m. Sydney, October 3. The Eight Hours Day Wheel Race resulted:—Spears 1,. Dickson 2, Ho'rton 3. Won by a length and a half in 4min 39sec. Spears also-won the McGowen Handicap, doing the mile in 2min llsec. Cutliffe won the Mile Amateur Championship of New South Wales in 2min 24 3-5 sec.
