CARD PLAYERS' SOCIAL
The East End Card Club's members held a pleasant little gathering at the Red House Hotel last night to celebrate thedr victory in the Card Association'® tournament. Representatives of the other affiliated clubs were among the guests, and His Worship the Mayo® shook off his official duties to preside over the festive board. At his side were Colonel Ellis, president of the East End! Club, Mr. J. Hayden, donor of the challenge shield, and Mr. E. Whittle, captain of the club. Toasts, handled capitally by the various speakers, were proposed and responded to, sandwiched in between the items of a capital musical programme. "The King" and the "Card Association" were proposed by the Mayor, and Mr. F. L. Webster replied on behalf ol the Association. The principal functtoß of the evening was the presentation of the Hayden Challenge Shield and tth* Cribbage Shield to the East End Club. Mr. Hayden presented Lis shield to' Mr. E. Whittle, president of the dub, and; remarked that he was glad to aee so many players, 240 in all, competing for it. The Cribbage Shield, which had QB6K. presented by Mr. Tisch, was handed By him to the Club, and he offered to sent a second shield when the epROMf for names of winners were filled lAfc Whittle, in returning thanks, considered the Fire Brigade the strongest team in the competition, and East End had been fortunate in beating them. He hoped' that when the shields left the oaetote of the East End Club they woaid aJ least have the satisfaction of runners-up. He thanked the donDU of the shields for their very practfcil terest in this healthy aud incraaftfettAt popular evening pastime. Mr. W. Dbdtrill's trophy, awarded to the meaatoL-Jt the East End Club showing the bwH dividual record, was presented tip Club captain to Mr. G. Ttamptafc iflj* had won 68 out of 100 games <» bage, and won ten out of twelve es.
