There was 110 quorum present at the meeting of the Recreation Grounds Board last night, and the meeting lapsed. luglewood is selling bread at sixpence a loaf, cash over the counter, seven pence booked at the counter, «nd eightpence delivered and booked. The tender of Messrs. Roberts aim Sou lias been accepted for the erection of the new county on the site opposite the Courthouse on the comer of Powderlwm and Robe streets. At the .Magistrate's Court yesterday morning the Maori, Te Raro Tokaiawa, diarged with theft, was further remanded till Thursday morning. A first offending drunk, who did not appear, was fined 5s and .costs. The Hon. J. A. Millar stated in the House oil 'Saturday morning that the railway classification ljst will be placed before members very shortly. It is already in the printer's hands, and may be expected early this week. A change is as good as a rest, in somt cases. The larrikin element in Oakura district seems to have tired of throwing wheelbarrows over precipices and interfering with hand-carts belonging to the County Council. The latest freak, as reported by the foreman, is to attempt to pull out one of the posts in the fence on the Oakura deviation, ' Four beautiful trout were on view in Mr. A. S. Hassell's window yesterday, representing pa.rt of the catch of Messrs. W. Birch and F. Whittle in the Waiw'a.kaiho stream. The largest fish. was. a brown trout, turning the scale at 91b., and there were three line rainbow trout weighing 3y 3 1b., 4lm. aad 5% lb. respectively. The possibilities of the Waiwakaiho river when the local hatoheriei are in full working order, should be enormous. The rainbow trout do especially well in its waters. Among the topics which have engaged a good deal of attention during the weekend is the question of Mr. Hine's charges (says the Dominion). It is suggested in some quarters that Mr. Hine will refuse to appear before the committee which has been appointed to consider the matter, jbut this is not the view held in usually well-informed circles. When the committee meets on Wednesday' morning the first business will, of course, be to elect a chairman, and in this connection the name of Mr. Myers, the new .MVP. for Auckland East, is freely mentioned. As time will necessarily have to be given to the parties affected to enable them to prepare their cases it is probable that the committee will, after settling the method of procedure, adjourn for some days. The instinct of the eat in finding its way "back to former places of abode is weli known. A case has just been reported to us that is worth recording. A few weeks ago Mr. W. Allen, of Kent road, shifted to Vogeltown to reside. The favorite family cat was placed ii, a box and put in the bottom of the trap, the box being covered with a tarpaulin. The animal seemed content enough in hisi new home until a halfgrown kitten was brought into the household, when she manifested considerable jealousy and took the first opportunity to decamp. Nothing was heard of the cat for about five weeks, when she turned up at her old home oil the Kent road. If ihe feline returned home by the road she had a nine mile trot. If, however, she went across country, the more likely route, she had two rivers to swim.
