SOCiAL NEWS. (Conducted by "Eileen.") A DANCE. The Whakatika Hockey Glut held a most enjoyable dance in the Brougham--■street Hall last Thursday evening. Tihe hall was prettily decorated with bunting, graceful stands of arum lilies, and hockey sticks. The supper table looked chariniig, being tastefully arranged witih specimen vases of scarlet Mas and bowls of yellow broom, the crect'it being due to Miss Brewster. Mr. W. Woods' orchestra supplied excellent music. The following were some of tihe dresses worn:— Mrs. Walker, cream net over satin, with pale blue ceinfcuire and pale blue bands in skirt. Miss 'M. AFTERNOON TEA. Last Thursday afternoon the members of the New Plymouth Club entertained a number of their friends at an afternoon tea, and it was thought by many of the ladies that it ought to be a more frequent occurrence, as these little functions are most enjoyable. A suggestion was made
(and fry a man, too) that it would he a splendid idea to give over one of the spare rooms of the Club to the weaker -ex, and allow them to make it into a ■ Girls' dub." Oh! if it were only put to the meeting and carried! During tine afternoon speeches were made by Mr. Tisch (the Mayor), Air. I Thie much-talked-of "The Girl from Rectors" was staged before- a packed house (the majority being men) last Friday evening, ibuit keen disappointment ; was felt over the indisposition of Mr. ' Hugthi Wand on account of the prevailing i influenza. ATisa Grace Palotta acted in h.er usual charming and graceful manner.
