ATHLETICS.
NEW PLYMOUTH OLUB. The annual meeting of the New Plymouth Amateur Athletic Club, was fixea for Wednesday evening, but owing to the meagre attendance the meeting was adjourned till next Wednesday week. Some of those present referred to this small attendance, which, considering the very satisfactory position that the club was in, was to be (regretted, ana the hope was expressed : that .those interested would muster in ( stronger force at the adjourned meeting. The annual report reads as follows : "As will be seen the iclub will be free to commence this operations with a credit balance of over £8 and with no outstanding liabilitiesi. When it is considered that the club had not sufficient active members during its first season to run a clulb meeting, this position must be considered most satisfactoi,... Altogether ten members were reins-tated by the New Zealand Amateur Atlueth Association, and it is most gratifying to your committee to find that every such member has remained true to his amateur status, showing clearly, as can be seen throughout all branches of sport in the Dominion at the present time, that amateurism is the one branch that can command the attention of the pubuc ,and without which'these various pastimes would in timeiade away. Of this club only one member has gone over to the professional !hody.' During th-i season your committee held several evening meetings, which were much appreciated by the members and well patronised by the public. ! Several mixed meetings were also held- Your committee trusts 'that more new active members will come this season, and, as it is now permissible to put cash cycling events on our programme, we should not have the difficulty experienced last- year in running a- club meeting. Your club was represented at' the kit New Zealand championship meeting hekl in Auckland in February by Mt. M. B. Word, who competed unsuccessfully in the 100 and 220 yards charair pionship.. In conclusion, your committee wishes to thank most heartily those gentlemen who came forward with financial assistance at the formation of the club, and can only trust that such assistance may be the means of establishing on a sound financial basis an athletic 1 club having for its sole object the fostering of the ■irue amateur spirit among the present and rising generation
