Mr. Harry Holford, whose first association with ttie Taranaki Herald wee in 1871, leaves for the south this morning. He < was made the recipient of a staff presentation on Saturday. The death is announced (says an Oamaru -wire) of Mr. F. Collis, of White Rocks, a very old resident of North Otago. Deceased met with a buggy accident a short time ago, from which he never recovered. The death is recorded of Mrs. P. McCarthy, of Manaia, widow of the late Philip McCarthy, at the ripe age of 73 yearn It is only eight months sb*» her husband died. Five eons and one daughter are left to mourn her death. Mr. S. N. Ziman, *he brilliant Auckland and 1908 New Zealand Rhodes Scholar, has passed tlhe Indian Olvfl Service examination. This entitles hhn to a position in the Indian Service. Successful candidates, when found medically fit, ore allowed by the Government about £2OO for the following year to remain in England, and study the language 'used in the district to which they are appointed. Mr. Ziman, who was 23 years of age in November last, has been at Oxford for two years, and, this yjear, he has taken his B.A. degree with firatclass honors in mathematics*. So far he is the only one of the New Zealand Rhodes scholars who was young enough, at the time of his election, to compete for a position in the Indian Civil Service.
