DISTRICT NEWS.

MIDBIRST. (Prom Our Own Correspondent.) A lantern entertainment was given in ! the Salisbury Eoad hall on Friday eveni ing, 16th inst., by Mr. James Sexton, of , Stratford, in aid of the school funds, J and which resulted in the sum of £2 15s I being added to the school committee's credit. Mr. W. Hatha way, chairman of the Salisbury Eoad school committee, I introduced and thanked Mr. Sexton for his Mndness in coming out. and giving his services gratuitously. The views shown were taken by Mr. Sexton while on a trip to the Old Country last year, and comprised Irish, Scotch, English, and Continental ones. The British views were especially appreciated by those of the audience who saw on the screen pictures of places well known in days long past. For country children especially, such entertainments are excellent, affording as they do instruction which makes their geography and history lessons in school more real and interesting. The district is greatly indebted to Mr. Sexton for his kindness. The Oddfellows Lodge is holding an euchre tournament and dance on the 22nd inst. These entertainments are very popular in Midhirst, and given a fine night, it should be a success. The settlers on the York Road are going to hold a fancy dress ball at thti York Road schoolroom on Thursday; next. Three prizes will be given, viz., for the best man, lady, and child in fancy dress. Mr. Frank Brown, son of Mr. Alex. Brown, of Waipuku, left here last week to take up a position as clerk in the Government Insurance office in Christchurch. Mr. Brown, who is an ex-pupil of the Stratford District High School, is very popular in this district, and his many friends join in wishing him the best of luck.

EAHOTD. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The local dairy factory is now turning out 15 boxes of butter daily. The recent <rough weather has had the effect of checking any rapid increase in the milk supply, but it is fully expected that the present season will see a record output from the factory as there are several new suppliers. Mr. Jury, proprietor of the coach, and has noble henchmen, Messrs. Lobb and Tunnicliffe, deserve congratulation for the excellent manner in which they have carried the mail during the past three months. Every afternoon, wet or fine, our mail has arrived, with a promptness and regularity that our unaccustomed minds took a day or two to become used to. but which with our previous experience of Mr. .Jury's service we fully anticipated. Many settlers here were regretting that the end of this month would probably ,see a return to i\ie more up-to-date but (judging : by previous experience) less reliable motor traction. However, it is rumored that the present service is to remain'm force for some time yet. While it proves so satisfactory, long may it continue, at all events until something arrives that is proved to be better. On Friday evening a farewell social waa tendered td'Mr. and Mrs. M'Hanighan and family. There was a good attendance representative of. settlers from Okato to Opunake, showing the esteem in which the guests were held along the coast. The principal amusement of the evening was.dancing, and under tba of Me- "3. A. D. Fielder and J. Rothery, who are past masters in the art, ever.. ia>sed off very smoothly. Excellent ii.:* =i" wag provided by Mr. Knowles. During the evening a capital programme was submitted, songs being rendered by Misses Kennedy (2), Rev. Addenbrooke, and Messrs. Fear and Mitchell. Miss Rookes gave a nice exhibition of fancy dancing, as did Mr. E. Turner of fire club swinging. After supper had been done full justice to, Mr. S. J. Candish made reference to the many good qualities of Mr. M'llanighan, and presented him on behalf of residents of the district with a purse of sovereigns, Mr. M'Hawigtfmn feelingly responded.
