■ TURF TOPICS. i (By "Moturoa.") Concluding day at Avondale. The Wanganui Spring meeting opens, on Thursday.

Kopu is coming into favor for the N.Z. Cup. Mr. Angus Keith will start the fields at Waverlev.

, Three first favorites scored at Avondale on Wednesday. Cross Battery has dropped a foal to Positano, the sire of Poseidon.

The second hurdle race at Avondale saw Pari tutu and Royal Day, both Taranaki horses, home in the van.

Emblem, with Billy Young up, was sent out favorite for the Mount Albert Handicap, and was left standing on the mark. Her backers then left to catch the last train. >

Marathon did not sport silk at the Lower Valley meeting, but is a sure starter at Wanganui. 1 Visitors to the Ashburton meeting were not impress with Los Angelos as a New Zealand Cup horse. The chestnut cannot 'be held in the first mile, and can have no hope of seeing out a two miles event. It was ha/rd luck for Mr. A. Jackson missing the New Zealand Cup acceptances with Roosevelt. The little son of Mensohikofl:' "is going splendidly, and is sure to do big things-next November. Tribulation broke his "duck" on Thursday, when he won the -Maiden at Maryborough in hollow fashion. He started- five times as a tworyear-old, and failed every time. What tribulation! In Aucsland they say that Poictiers is going to turn out a real smasher, but the chestnut was not properly tuned up when he followed King Soult home in the Avondale Guineas on Wednesday. Sydney-aiders are not much impressed with the Multiform colt Sunburnt,, and they aver that he ''makes a noise" when galloping. If that is so, the colt's A.J.C. prospects are practically hopeless. ± Wffiat a g.reat horse California must be! After getting a bad run throughout the Plumpton Handicap he only went under iby a head to Lochbuie, to whom he was presenting -3st 41b. in -weight. Loelibuie filled the role of runner-up to Miss Winnie in the same evenit last year. The Canterbury J.C.have remitted the £lO fine inflicted on Jockey H. Donovon for not getting that erratic customer, Gold Braid, off the mark in a race at the Autumh meeting.' The- Club ■informed the owner of the horse that they are not prepared to accept- the .'entry of Gold Braid at future, meetings... Glancing over, the , list of winners of past AvondalsGuineas, one ctoines acr«s£ the names of Nonette, Wairiki, Ropa, Cambrian and Elysian. King Soult, who scored so, easily on Wednesday, chopped two seconds off the previous, best tiofe recorded, and • his stamps him as a colt worth following. The C;J.C. Derby may riot BeMjfeyond him;-:;-Thus writes "Asmodeus":—'lt was an amusing coincidence that the winner of the Steeplechase at Avondale, namely? Antarctic, should have been,.ridden. byScott. Surely, this, is a good augury'for Captain . Scott's Pole trip. ( Probably many superstitious 'backers saw an!d followed the' coincidence.-

The Wanganui; tracks bore a .busy appearance yesterdHy monring. '. A' large number of yisitlng; horse's wer'e' seeii ouit, but nothing in the way of fast gallops were recorded. ' Mason's team look very well, Danube in particularbearing,a. welltrimmed appearance. Mr. George Price had five "Highden" horses working, Nyland and Polymorphous moving well. St. Bin was given .easy,.work. ..T.fe horse appears to have got over .tfte paralysis which troubled him at' Bull- (where his party lost a record pile' of bullion). When St. Bill is all. right : you can go a million on 'him. Coroneted was also working, but looks hardly ready* for the fray. :'i ' ' ; -

First Barrell was well supported all over the colony for the First Handicap Steeplechase at, Avondale on Saturday, but the lightly Weighted Antarctic made no race of it, and the favorite could only finish a close .third. Antarctic chances Ms -fences somewhat, and with a rise of 171b. will just be about steadied.

First Barrell meets Antarctic on I'7lb. better terms in the Second Steeplechase. The Hawera-owned Royal Day,, who ran second to Paritatu in the Open Hurdle Race on Wednesday is considered a' likeiy starter in the Maiden Hurdle Race tb-day. ■

Full Rate is in form again, and he demonstrated at Martiriborougli on Thursday. Carrying tihe steadier of Ost olb lie led all the way in the McFarlane Handicap, and won very easily. His name does not figure amongst entries for the Wanganui meeting. Naumai did not get amy -too well in the Mt. Albert Handicap on Wednesday, in" which race lie was ridden by H. Gray. It is a new thing for Naumai io receive weight from any Ihorse in a foaur furlong race, but Turbine is handicapped to give the sou'tthern Morse 51b—if lie can!

Mr. J. iMcßeth, of Wanganui, left for Sydney on Friday to witness the running of'lw-s mare Cmcinella on the other side. Jockey A. Qlliver will steer the neddy.

Salute is improving with every gallop, and may be expected to make a bold showing in future engagements. King Soul't is asked to call')' a fairly heavy load—for a three-year-old—in the Members' Handicap fro-day, 'and if he can beat Coromandel and Co. he will be as. .good a colt as his admirers imagine. There is more'mtoTfey'to'toe'won ypith jumpers ih>»Prance tihan> in any other country in the world, a fact that is further confirmed by, the reference by ft Continental correspondent to the steeple|chaser Darfdolo, who hroke one of hife legs while running dn a race at Enghein a few weeks ago, and (had to be destroyed. Among Bandolo's wins- were the Grand Steeplechase of fParis (twice), and in jumping races during his career no less a sum than £2lsoo was credited him.
