HOSPITAL BOARD.
MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Taranaki Hospital and Charitable Aid Board was held yesterday. Present:—Messrs. P. C. J. Beliringer (chairman), G. W. Browne, W. Outfield, iM. J. Macßeynolds, C. Andrews, J. E. Hill, J. Brown, G. V. Tate, C. O'Sullivan, and D. H. McDonald, An apology for absence through illness was received from Mr. E. Maxwell. Dr. A. E. Walker, medical superintendent of the Hospital, reported thai during August 31 patients had been admitted to the institution, 29 had been discharged, 2 had died, and there were 41 remaining. Seventeen operations haa been performed. The matron in charge of the Ola People's Home (Mrs. A. Bayly) reported that during the month one male had been admitted to the Home, two males had died, and there were now 29 males and 5 females in the Home. Miss M. Bilton forwarded her resignation of the position of district nurse at Uruti. The resignation was accepted with regret. Dr. Valintine, Inspector-General of Hospitals, who had been communicated with as soon as the resignation was received, telegraphed 'recommending Miss A. O'Oallaghan as Nurse Bilton's successor. Nurse O'Callaghan was accordingly appointed to the position. She cannot take up the duties until the end of November, but' Nivrse Bilton will be asked to continue in her position until that time. The Board agreed, in accordance with the resolution arrived at in the recent conference between representatives of the New Plymouth, Hawera, and Stratford Hospital Boards, and the Friendly Societies Hospital Association, to reduce the maintenance charge to members of the latter association to 4s fid per day, for twelve months from October 1, such payment to be guaranteed by the association, and a list of members to be furnished to the secretary of the boards. The Paymaster-General notified that subsidies to the amount of £783 6s 3d had been paid to the board's credit. The names of Misses E. M. Hawkins, (New Plymouth), R. M. Brayshaw (Patea), and C. King (Gisbornej wer* added to the probationers' list. Dr. T. H. A. Valintine, InspectorGeneral of Hospitals, asked the board to allow Miss Brown, matron of the hospital, to accept the appointment ol examiner under the Nurses' Registration Act. Tn nrd'-r to ob -<m a thoroughly efficient board of examiners Dr. Yalintine desired to be able to avail himself of the services of some of the best nurses and those who were acquainted with the latest methods of, training of nurses and the most up-to-dnte methods of medical and surgical nursing. The matron's services on this board might at times necessitate her ab-1 sence from the hospital for a-few days, but only about once a year.—The board appreciated the compliment to its hospital, and granted the permission
